HIERROS DE LA HABANA: COLONIA, REPÚBLICA Y ACTUALIDAD

An illustrated presentation by Ileana Pérez Drago, based on her ground-breaking research in the European catalogues on 19th century ironwork and the decorative and structural use of iron in the buildings
of Havana.

Her presentation will  cover the evolution of the city’s architecture since its foundation in the 16th century until the Republican period, highlighting the use of iron work in colonial architecture, its urbanistic and stylistic elements during the Republican era, and recent interventions in the Historical Center
of Havana.

This event is part of our CreateNYC Language Access Series on Cuban History, Art, and Literature.
It will be held in Spanish.

Ileana Pérez Drago holds a Ph.D. in Architecture from the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid and a degree in Restoration from the Universidad de Valladolid in Spain. She has written the book Hierros de La Habana: La herrería en la arquitectura colonial habanera. Siglo XIX (2009), based on her doctoral thesis El hierro en la arquitectura colonial habanera: Condicionantes formales, técnicas e históricas. She has applied her professional expertise on the rehabilitation of colonial buildings in the Historical Center of Havana and on the architecture of interiors in Madrid and Panamá. She presently resides in Miami.
