XX La Iglesia en Cuba: Legado histórico, cultural y espiritual

Saturday 20 / Sunday 21, November 2021 from 11 am to 5 pm

The Cuban Cultural Center of New York presents its 20th consecutive annual conference, this year titled La Iglesia en Cuba: Legado histórico, cultural y espiritual, delving into the overarching legacy of the Catholic Church in Cuba, from the 16th century to the present, with emphasis on its preponderant role in the educational sphere from colonial times to 1961, its initial trials and tribulations and diminished role under the Communist government, its controversial policy of accommodation and survival, and its subsequent resurgence after Pope John Paul II’s visit to Cuba in 1998. Transcendent Cuban ecclesiastical figures, from both inside and outside the Island, will be profiled, including Pedro Meurice, Eduardo Boza Masvidal, and Agustín Román. The conference will also highlight transformative events for both the Catholic hierarchy and the faithful, including the ecclesiastical conferences REC and ENEC of 1986, as well as schooling and social services presently provided by Catholic religious entities, and the commitment to justice and freedom of expression of parish priests throughout the Island. The conference will close with an analytical perspective of the Catholic Church vis-a-vis the growing civic and peace movement in Cuba after the nationwide protests on July 11, and the projected role of the Church in the Island’s future.

The two-day flagship event will include illustrated presentations, films, and engaging Q&As with the viewing audience, and will be headlined by renowned scholars, theologians, filmmakers, and artists from Cuba, Latin America, and the United States, including keynote speakers Mons. Manuel Maza Miguel, S.J. and Dagoberto Valdés, historians Teresita Fernández Soneira and Julio Estorino, Catholic activists Amada Pablo and Osvaldo Gallardo, filmmakers Ángel Kataraín and Gloria Rolando, theologian Nazario Vivero López, Cuban priests José Conrado, Jorge Luis Pérez Soto, Rolando Montes de Oca and Alberto Reyes, and sociologist Silvia Pedraza, among others, and will be capped by a rendition of Virgen Mambisa by Cuba’s Schola Cantorum Coralina.

The congreso will be complemented by a spectacular CUBAN MUSICA SACRA CONCERT starring the prestigious early music ensemble ARTEK, under the direction of Gwendolyn Toth, and featuring works by Cuban composers Esteban Salas, Cayetano Pagueras, Cratillo Guerra and others.
