LA MAGIA DE LA ZARZUELA

Friday, December 18, 2020 at 7 pm

The CCCNY caps the year with a recital not to be missed! Celebrate the Holiday Season with a memorable repertoire of arias featuring the most legendary Spanish and Cuban zarzuelas.

The zarzuela is a Spanish lyric-dramatic genre dating back to the 17th century. It alternates between spoken and sung scenes, the latter incorporating operatic and popular song, as well as dance. The zarzuela spread to the Spanish colonies, and many Hispanic countries, notably Cuba, developed their own traditions. In Cuba the zarzuelas of Ernesto Lecuona María la OEl cafetal), Eliseo Grenet (La virgen morena) and Gonzalo Roig (Cecilia Valdés), based on Cirilo Villaverde’s classic novel) represent a brief golden age of political and cultural importance. Headlining the program will be soprano Virginia Herrera-Crilly and tenor César Delgado, accompanied by pianist Andrés Sarre.
