TALLER II: LYDIA CABRERA’S MAGICAL WORLD OF STONES

Friday, May 17, 2019 at 6:30 pm

The second of three spring workshops on the legacy and significance of the work of Lydia Cabrera, a pioneer ethnographer of Cuba’s African culture, on the 120th anniversary of her birth. Each workshop will be held in a private home and will be open to members only, with pre-registration required. A reading list will be provided to those attending.

This workshop will be led by Irma Davidson, who will discuss Cabrera’s exploration of the magical world of precious stones in her book Otan Iyebiye: Las piedras preciosas, where she traces not only their significance in African traditions, but also in those of other Eastern and Western cultures, beliefs and historical times. The workshop will consist of readings, descriptions and a visual survey, followed by a discussion.
