CINE FOCUS: ‘EL LIBRO DE LOS DIEZ’

A special screening of Ignacio Granados‘s historic documentary on some of the key players who signed the groundbreaking Carta de los diez in 1991, including  Fernando Velázquez Medina and María Elena Cruz Varela, who spearheaded the dissident group Criterio Alternativo, which disseminated the letter.

The screening will be followed by a panel with some the signers of the letter, including Velázquez Medina and Cruz Varela, as well as Roberto Luque Escalona, Nancy Estrada Galbán, and Manuel Díaz Martínez.  The panel will be introduced by filmmaker Ignacio Granados, who will also moderate a Q&A with the participation of the audience.

This event is part of our CreateNYC Language Access Series on Cuban History, Art, and Literature. The presentation will be in Spanish.

Cuban writer Ignacio Granados (Havana, 1963) resides in Miami since 1998. He studied religion as a postulant in the Orden of Santo Domingo and became Oratorian of Saint Augustine. From 2004 to 2010 he worked as an editor for the publishing firms La Torre de Papel and Iduna in Miami, and also as a contributing journalist for El Nuevo Herald’s cultural section. In 2010 he published his book of essays Diván de Lezama Lima (presented at the Miami International Book Fair), launching the year-long lezamian celebrations sponsored by Editorial Iduna. Since 2004 he heads Ediciones Itinerantes Paradiso, publisher of many of his philosophical and political essays, as well as his translations of French classics and some Cuban authors. In 2010 he created El Manierista Productions, dedicated to the creation of documentary videos on history and culture in exile from both Cuba and Puerto Rico.
