An illustrated talk and recital on the music of Miguel Castellanos (1862-1940), a 19th century Cuban-American composer and pianist, praised by Camille Saint-Saëns and lauded by José Martí as one of the best Chopin interpreters of his day. The musical legacy of Miguel Castellanos is important, not only for the beauty of his compositions and his mastery of the instrument, but also for the key role he played in fundraising, through his concerts, for the cause of Cuban independence.

The presentation will include an introduction by Teresa Marin Rishik, Executive Director of the Performing Arts Conservatory of New York, an in-depth profile of the musician’s life and career by research historian Andrés Castellanos, as well as a recital of some of Miguel Castellanos’s newly unearthed compositions, featuring performances by pianist E. Douglas Bomberger, soprano Teresa Bomberger, and faculty and outstanding students from the conservatory.

This unique presentation on the legacy of Miguel Castellanos, whose professional debut in 1882 was in the original building of New York’s Steinway Hall (founded in 1866 at 71-73 East 14th Street, pictured above) will appropriately take place in present-day Steinway Hall, in the heart of Manhattan.
