YOSVANY TERRY AFRO-CUBAN SEXTET

Saxophonist Yosvany Terry on chekeré.

“(His music has) helped redefine Afro-Cuban and Latin Jazz as a complex new idiom,” raved
The New York Times about Cuban-born saxophonist and composer Yosvany Terry, who masterfully melds the traditional sounds of his native Cuba with innovative, fiery post-bop haromonies. The son of bandleader and famed chekeré master Eladio “Don Pancho” Terry Gonzales, Yosvany grew up in Cuba where he studied classically at the prestigious National School of Arts before moving to New York in 1999.

Terry’s music has been praised for being rooted in the rich Cuban jazz tradition while always pushing forward. His 2014 release, GRAMMY® Award-nominated New Throned King, features music based on cantos and rhythms from the western Cuban province of Matanzas. His previous album, 2012’s Today’s Opinion, was selected as one of the Top 10 Albums of the Year by The New York Times’ critic Nate Chinen. And his latest project, The Bohemian Trio, is a genre-defying contemporary music ensemble whose first album, Okónkolo, blends classical lyricism, jazz harmony, Latin dance, and Afro-Cuban beats reflecting the ensemble’s diverse cultural and musical backgrounds.

Terry has been honored with a Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors grant and a 2015 Doris Duke Artist Award. He currently serves as Director of Jazz Ensembles and Senior Lecturer in Music at Harvard University.
